Finding Loophole’s; it’s in our nature
Making great beer and catching early morning waves, it’s all about finding loopholes. It’s not just that, that’s in being a Loophole brewer. Being sustainable and environmentally friendly is a large part of their mission too!
Their story begins with Des Hooper. He has been making wine on the edge of the Great Southern Ocean on the Limestone Coast near Robe and Kingston, in South Australia, since settling there in 1993. The lifestyle is inspirational. From surfing the impressive waves to finding a natural aquifer in the limestone riddled paddocks while hiking. And the water is delicious, filtered for millions of years and pure as can be so, into the beer it went!

Recipes were honed with the help of head brewer Tom O’Reilly and trials began. Loophole supplied its first keg at Easter, 2015 to the Cape Jaffa Wines cellar door and to the local watering holes in Robe, the Caledonian Inn and the Crown Inn Hotel, in Kingston SE. Called Quick Hare Cape Ale, a full-flavoured but sessionable ale incorporating toasted barley, oats and wheat malt. The addition of Vienna malt adds a subtle toasted bready aroma. The generous use of three Australian grown hops, Enigma, Vic Secret and Galaxy, give a unique bouquet of fruit and floral aromas – passionfruit, white grape and stone fruit.

Fast forward to 2022: Full brew house built and with Des’ son Harry joining Tom to brew Loophole’s core range of six beers each week and creating small batch brews monthly from IPAs, to a Hazy Pale, Sours and winery collabs. Their task; endless innovation! Loophole Brewing Co. is also committed to eliminating waste and pollution, by recycling and reusing anything that they can from production to consumption.
